

The body of the endnote is composed of a single sentence that explains why the cited material is relevant to the paper. The endnote pages come before the bibliography.Įndnotes consist of two parts, the body and the anchor. The title notes at the top of the first page are centered one inch from the top of the page. Endnotes are listed on separate pages at the conclusion of the work. However, if the entire discussion within the essay were contained in the endnote, it would not need to be separate from the rest of the document.įootnotes appear at the foot of the page containing the text to which they are referring. This example uses an endnote because there is material within the text of the essay that does not fall under any other category.


For example, if you were discussing the causes of war and wanted to mention the First World War, you could include it in your analysis with the following endnote: "For more information on this topic, see the section 'The Causes of War' in John's book." For example, one might include the name of an author who provided an important contribution to the study of his or her subject matter even though that author's work is not directly related to the current discussion.Įndnotes are used to refer to material that has been included in the reference list but that does not fit into any other category within the text of the paper.
